Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) in the pharmaceutical industry relates to the demonstration of the value of a medicine through using clinical and economic evidence.  

HEOR roles vary and there are a number of areas within the field in which you can specialise.  In broad terms, health economists study economic and quality of life data collected from clinical trials, to profile the value of a drug and to show that it works effectively to treat a disease.  This data is presented to doctors, patients, and regulators to show the effectiveness of a drug and to help obtain access for patients to that medicine.  HEOR professionals work closely with colleagues in market access and pricing & reimbursement as they use health economics and health outcomes data to try to enter the market and gain optimal pricing and reimbursement for a drug.  

Candidates looking to pursue a career in HEOR are expected to have gained at least a Masters degree in health economics, or a related field, such as public health.  Attributes including good, analytical project management and communications skills will be highly advantageous when entering this demanding field.  The most common route into a career in HEOR is to gain experience by working for a consultancy company, which will offer broad insight into the area. Once experience is gained, this will open up many more opportunities and allow upwards career development.
